Case For Support
The Street Dog Coalition (SDC) is a non-profit organization that provides free veterinary care to pets of people experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. The organization was created in response to the growing number of individuals experiencing homelessness with pets, who they love and depend on. SDC is committed to protecting the human-animal bond by caring for both the pet and the person.
Pets are often a source of comfort and companionship for individuals experiencing homelessness. That said, the health and well-being of a pet is critical to their person’s health and well-being. Using a One Health approach to street medicine, SDC cares for the mental and physical health on both ends of the leash. Unfortunately, many individuals experiencing homelessness cannot access affordable veterinary care, which can lead to unnecessary illness and heartache.
The Street Dog Coalition is committed to addressing this critical need by providing free veterinary care to pets of individuals experiencing, or at risk of, homelessness. The organization's dedicated volunteers include veterinarians and veterinary technicians, assistants, and students, as well as advocates and allies from various professions and backgrounds. SDC provides pets with core vaccinations, parasite prevention, and a medical exam that includes treatment of minor injuries and illnesses. Whenever possible, SDC also offers services for the pet owner such as health screenings, dental cleanings, haircuts, clothing, food, etc.
The Street Dog Coalition also works to educate individuals experiencing homelessness about the importance of responsible pet ownership and provides resources to help them care for their pets, including spay/neuter vouchers. While pet overpopulation is an ethical problem that causes unnecessary suffering for unwanted animals, it also represents an unnecessary use of limited resources for communities struggling with that issue. By providing S/N vouchers, SDC effectively frees up budgetary funds that would otherwise be allocated to shelters. As a result, our distribution of S/N vouchers directly aligns with our emphasis on a One Health model of care, with positive outcomes for people, their pets, and the environment.
By supporting The Street Dog Coalition, you will help us expand our reach and provide even more pets and people with the care they need to live healthy and happy lives. With your help, we can continue to deliver compassionate care in various forms, and become a reliable resource where pets and people alike are treated with respect and dignity.
