Our History
Our Beginning
In May of 2015, the first Street Dog Clinic took place in Fort Collins, Colorado, across from the Sister Alice Murphy Center for Hope. Twenty-five dogs and five cats received free veterinary care from a team of five veterinarians, four veterinary technicians, three veterinary students and several dedicated volunteers. The Street Dog Coalition has since expanded to over sixty cities across the U.S. and the growth continues.
“It’s amazing what we can do when we come together to make these clinics happen.”
— Jon Geller, DVM, SDC FOUNDER
Our Community
We could not do what we do without our volunteer veterinarians and One Health professionals as well as students, sponsors, donors, and advocates who believe in the importance of the human-animal bond. We are also incredibly grateful for our partnership with the University of Colorado School of Medicine and Colorado State University’s Inclusive Health Collaborative that provides routine access to free veterinary and physical/mental health promotion and disease prevention services. As a result of this collaboration, we have the opportunity to pilot our One Health Street Medicine model by working with veterinary students as well as social work students and 3rd year medical school students.
“There’s no judgment at the clinic, only care and love from Dr. Geller and the other volunteers. They understand that these animals are our kids. They hold our lives together and keep us going.”
-lori harmon, client of the street dog coalition in Fort COllins, CO
Our Supporters
In addition to volunteers, monetary and in-kind donations are also vital to our growth. Many thanks to our grantors and our Legacy Sponsors, Merck Animal Health, Western Veterinary Partners, The ElleVet Project, and Hill’s Pet Nutrition (a subsidiary of Colgate-Palmolive) who make it possible for us to sustain our growth.
“When companies like Merck Animal Health donate products, we’re able to redirect funds to help do more for pets and their owners.”
— Jon Geller, DVM, SDC FOUNDER
Our Future
“People living on the street are isolated and often rejected by their families. Their pets offer companionship, protection, help them navigate dangerous places and give them purpose,” says Dr. Jon Geller, the veterinarian who founded The Street Dog Coalition in Colorado in 2015. “We’re committed to protecting the human-animal bond and caring for the lives on both ends of the leash.”
